Smokey Mountain Tops Receives MIA Accreditation

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.Smokey Mountain Tops is the first stone fabricator in Tennessee to receive accreditation from the Marble Institute of America (MIA).

The shop, a member of Artisan Group fabricator network, completed a rigorous process of testing quality, safety and service, to ensure a high standard on residential and commercial stone projects.

ToddScottTodd Scott“Success today depends not only on the expertise of your company, but also on the company you keep,” says Todd Scott, owner of Smokey Mountain Tops. “Achieving accreditation from the MIA makes Smokey Mountain Tops a member of a very fine company of fabricators.

“Smokey Mountain Tops is now able to proudly display the accreditation logo, which symbolizes that they both are among the finest in the natural stone industry with respect to craftsmanship, safety, and business practices,” says Garen Distelhorst, MIA accreditation manager.

To receive accreditation as a MIA Natural Stone Fabricator, a company must have successfully completed three phases of application.

Phase one involves the completion of a detailed application that required the applicant company to provide various documents and references to ensure the company is in compliance with the 10 standards determined by the MIA Accreditation Commission.

Phase two requires the company’s qualifying agent (the designated company representative responsible for filing and maintaining accreditation records) to pass a 200-question multiple-choice test on the knowledge and application of material usage, installation, fabrication, restoration, care and maintenance, administration, legal/contracts, and jobsite and shop safety.

The final phase is a comprehensive site visit, with a facility and document review, plus one or more installation site visits.

“We are proud of this achievement because it is a reflection of the pride and dedication our employees have to the Artisan Group of premier countertop fabricators,” Scott added.

Smokey Mountain Tops Inc. opened in 1993 as a solid-surface importer, shipping product from Tessaro Inc. in Newcastle, England. In 2003, the company began fabricating Cambria®, and expanded three years later to include Corian®, Avonite®, granite41, and several other brands of countertops.

Smokey Mountain Tops is now one of the largest countertop producers in Tennessee, with two showrooms in the Knoxville and Nashville metropolitan areas.
